Ammonia & PPD Free

February 21, 2017

It is important to learn the difference between hair color products containing Ammonia and PPD from the ones being Ammonia and PPD free.

What is PPD you may ask?

PPD (paraphenylenediamine)

-  a chemical substance used as permanent dye that irritates our T cells (fight against infections/bacteria).

This substance is responsible for the possibility of a person developing sensitivity to the the hair color. If a person were to develop this sensitivity, the symptoms that follow are itchy, swelling, and redness of the scalp.

Risk:

  • Some allergic reactions can lead to death.

  • Delayed hypersensitivity reactions - blistering on sores and on scalp

Ammonia allows hair follicles to swell. The molecule used for hair products that contain ammonia are small, which leads to evaporation to occur quickly. This is where the strong odor comes while coloring the hair.

Ammonia-free products

contain larger molecules = less capable of saturating/ infusing in hair follicles

Causes less swelling of the hair
